Reflection on reflection
Having been created in the image of God, we are to be a reflection of Him. Especially as Christians, we are to mirror the character and nature of Christ. Anyone we meet should sense something different about us.
When we accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, our spirit is made new. All things are past and we are new creations in Christ. But our bodies are not made new. If we had a cold or a broken leg when we got saved, apart from a miracle, we will still have a cold or broken leg after.
The way we reflect God depends heavily upon our background. Having a harsh upbringing might lead to projecting that on God - believing He is harsh. That’s why we need to read the Bible. It’s how our minds are renewed, replacing our thoughts with God’s thoughts.
When we come upon a pond in the forest, the way it reflects the sun depends upon what’s in it. A pond filled with silt, leaves, rubber boots, garbage and sludge will not reproduce a mirror image of the sun and sky. But after removing the garbage, leaves, rubber boots and clearing out the sludge so fresh water can flow, the reflection is most brilliant.
We do not have to change. Jesus will still love us. But when we love someone, we do things to make them happy. Jesus said, “If you love Me, you will keep my commandments.”
We do not keep the commandments because we have to. We do it because we want to become more like Jesus, reflecting His image to the world around us.
