Before God Spoke….
In Job 38 God answers Job and asks,
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together
If only we could have been there. Perhaps hidden among the newly created angelic beings peering into the vast cosmos - black as could be. The LORD God pondering, mulling things over in His head - the air bubbling with anticipation. It was not silent, for all of we angels were singing - glorious ringing sounds, joyful and expectant as the LORD placed His brilliant mind on what He was about to do.
We had heard Him say His Name: Elohim - and we thrilled to hear it. I thought it meant all powerful or creator but heard Him say, “Lawgiver.” Some thought it referred to respecting His holiness, establishing spiritual and moral laws. But we were all wrong. It was something new.
He allowed us to see His thoughts. (This is possible in heaven.) We were amazed at the exciting array.Through the black chaos, we observed the Holy Spirit brooding or vibrating, an action creating heat and generating waves; ultraviolet, infrared, X-Rays, gamma rays, photons, electrons, radio waves, sound waves, electromagnetic waves, light reflection, wavelength and color erupted in a glorious display. He determined how magnitude, intensity and reflection would work. He generated refraction, spectrum and resolution.
Before creating the solar system, God worked out all the laws of physical cosmology, astronomy and astrophysics. (Genesis 1:14) He predetermined galaxy formation, magneto-hydrodynamics, and stellar astrophysics. He established the laws of gravity, trajectory, centrifugal force, ecliptics and retrograde motion. He specified the order of the planets so that the sun, moon, and earth are in what scientists now refer to as the “Goldilocks Zone.” (It’s not too hot and it’s not too cold. It’s just right.) A few miles closer to the sun and it would burn up. A few miles farther away and it would freeze. God stationed the large planet Jupiter next to Mars to absorb most of the comets spiraling by -guarding Earth.
Elohim developed height, weight, space and time, the atom and DNA all before He spoke.
We watched as The Supreme Lawgiver ordained the principles of mathematics, calculus, physics, quantum mechanics, nuclear physics, solid mechanics, chemistry and thermodynamics.
Ahead of creating earth, God organized the laws of mineralogy, geology, geography, geochemistry, sedimentology and tectonics. Our minds ached from the amount of data. But we sang anyway.
God resolved the laws of hydrology; how water would be transported from sea to dry land, or from under the crust of the earth to where it was useable by man. God designed clouds and rain. Not visible at first, God assigned water come up out of the ground. God developed the hydrologic system before Genesis 1 because He already knew about Noah’s flood. (Job 36:27; Ecclesiastes 1:6,7)
When He created plants, Elohim had previously established the laws governing botany, photosynthesis, embryology, biophysics, horticulture, agronomy and biology. He knew about the molecular, genetic and biochemical levels of cells, determine the taxonomy, physiology, microbiology, anatomy and morphology of plant life.
All we could do was praise God!
In creating birds, God had previously resolved the laws of aerodynamics, buoyancy, ballistics, and drag and designed navigational principles. He figured out migration. He decided what He wanted claws, talons and feathers to look like and how they would work.
Antecedent to creating animals and man, the Lord fixed laws governing zoology, biology, physiology, and optics. He designed feet, hands and paws. He crafted the stomach, hair and fur. Within animal life, He established circulatory, respiratory, reproductive and nervous systems. (Psalm 139:13-16)
We couldn’t even grasp the functions of the brain. But we exalted Almighty God!
He set up linguistics, art, mathematics, music, finance and psychology for human beings.
And this is just a partial list of all God had to know, understand and develop before He spoke.
Once He had determined even much more than we could ask or think, only then did God say,
“Let there be light.”
Because God is not just awesome in thought, but also in deed, the Bible records, “and there was light.”
And we sang for joy!
John 1:1, which teaches that Jesus Christ was present at creation, could be translated: “In the beginning was the Intelligence...” Our God is awesome!
God’s Name, Elohim, also indicates a Judge. God exercises this function after several of His acts of creation. When finished with light, He said it was good. He judged light.
After He had created the firmament, divided the waters, gathered them in one place, and made dry earth appear, He judged that was good.
After creating grass, plants and fruit, God established the law of genetics: that everything could bring forth seed only according to its kind. And God judged that to be good. And so on. (As an aside, it was only after He created Eve that God deemed His creation, “Very good.”)
Well, we weren’t there. But the oldest record of what happened is in the Bible. Reading it still makes me sing. God is known as “from Everlasting to Everlasting”. (It means from vanishing point to vanishing point.) So somewhere before the earlier vanishing point, God was thinking, creating, designing, and developing….everything.
God is the Ultimate Judge of all He created and He tells us that in His Name: Elohim.
And then, because He is the Lawgiver, He can override His own laws. Jesus walked on the water! Jesus raised people from the dead!
The third meaning of Elohim is King.
We can ask Elohim for anything and expect Him to have the knowledge, capability and authority to do it!
The Bible says we should call upon the Name of the Lord, and so I do. (1 Chronicles 16:2)
When I have a complex problem or a a medical issue I can’t figure out, I Call Upon Elohim.
When my brain not functioning the way it used to, I call Upon Elohim!
In a legal battle I can call Upon Elohim, to give me justice!
When my life is messy I call upon Elohim who ordered the planets!
When my life is chaotic and darkness covers it, I call Upon Elohim to send the Holy Spirit to bring order and light just as He did in Genesis 1:2.
God is awesome! He knows everything! Praise His Awesome Name, Elohim, the Lawgiver, Ruler, Judge and Creator of the Universe! (Isaiah 33:22)
And sing for Joy!
